BUSES FOR BASEBALL - HIGHLIGHTS
Nothing says summer more than baseball and bicycles. But for many disadvantaged children, the warm weather activities that other kids take for granted are nothing more than a dream.
On June 19, 2008 local high school students from the Indiana Action Team accompanied 25 players from the Fredrick Douglass Little League in Indianapolis on a bus trip to a Cincinnati Reds home game. They were greeted at the game by big league players Josh Fogg, David Ross and Javier Valentin. Upon their return to Indianapolis after the game, the children were welcomed home with a surprise gift – a bicycle given to each of them as part of the “Shifting Gears” program. View photos.
The trip was organized as part of the Major League Baseball Players Trust’s Buses for Baseball program that gives underprivileged children and youth throughout the United States the chance to attend a Major League game and meet the players. The Fredrick Douglas Little League was recommended for this honor by the Indianapolis Mayor’s Office. Throughout the day’s activities, high school students from the Indiana Action Team served as mentors to the little leaguers to highlight the need for positive enrichment programs for disadvantaged children.
