Aftercare Prison Mentoring: Desiring a lower recidivism rate, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has developed and introduced a residential re-entry program called the Life Connections Program. Life Connections is an 18 month, voluntary intensive faith-based program for inmates in the federal prison system. The program is open to inmates of all faiths, and it is unique in that it encourages inmates to address major life issues from the perspective of their own religion traditions. The program is held at five pilot federal prison sites across the country. After completing the program, inmates are matched with a faith group or congregation that will provide a mentoring team located in the community in which they will reside when they are released from prison. Aftercare Coordinators will locate and match the inmates with the groups. A circle of support system is used instead of a one-on-one model. Mentors are connected with inmates while they are still incarcerated and in half way houses. Mentoring is continued for at least a year after release.
