Words Travel Instructor

Words Travel is an innovative program for moms and dads in the criminal justice system, who are temporarily separated from their children. Parents learn methods to engage their children in active reading, rather than being passive listeners at story time. Each parent records a books on tape each week, reading to their child using the methods learned in each session. The children get a new book each week in the mail, along with a special tape from mom or dad that can be listened to whenever they like. Parents who have participated in this program report that their kids are excited about reading, and are comforted hearing their voice on tape. Parents gain confidence in reading out loud and to their children.  We are searching for two to four volunteers that can teach this program to moms and dads in our transitional housing programs for people who are leaving the criminal justice system. Both facilities are located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. We are also looking for volunteers in Evansville, Indiana. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of six weeks, in order to complete a full session of the Words Travel program.
